Beach Bathroom Quick Makeover

Fun beach theme bathroom

As I mentioned last week in How Do You Spa?, for many years my friend and I would frequent a spa with a coastal/beach theme. In many ways I associate a beach theme with relaxation and pampering. When there was an opportunity to create a beach theme in one of my bathrooms, I did, but I added more fun than spa.

This is a bonus 3-piece bathroom in our home. It’s a bonus in that we don’t need the extra shower on this floor, but we do use it more as a powder room.

Bathroom Design Broomfield COBeautiful Habitat

The beach theme all started with the things we inherited in the house – a simple vanity and shower tiled in travertine.

The jumping off point for a beach theme came from the Travertine tiles, which reminded me of sand.

The builder-basic mirror and lights were beyond boring and there was nothing beachy, relaxing, or fun in them.

Creative Interior Design SolutionsMy first order of business was to add interest to the lighting. I painted the basic fixture silver with a can of spray paint and creatively engineered the galvanized buckets over the glass. TaDa – Beach lighting! I added colorful accessories which, together with the fun new lighting, take the focus off of the boring, frameless mirror.

The toilet has it’s only little nook, which also needed a little something beach-inspired. My vision was to build a mini beach hut in the nook out of corrugated metal. I envisioned the corrugated metal behind the toilet and wrapping around the 2 sides, with a sloped roof  and a marine-inspired light. These photos are a bit of the inspiration.

Interior Designer ColoradoCreative Interior Design ColoradoWhile I was getting the toilet-nook-beach-hut design in order, I did install one piece of corrugated metal wall treatment behind the toilet as a place holder, along with a beach print we picked up on a trip to St. Thomas. (Now just envision the metal wrapping around and above – so much fun)

Bathroom DesignerYou’ll notice that I refer to the toilet plan in past-tense. It “was” because we are now moving. I’m a little sad that my toilet beach hut will never be realized. it was going to be adorable. However, I’ve enjoyed the beach bathroom for the last 5 years. it was a quick and easy makeover to an otherwise bland space.

“Autumn – the year’s last, loveliest smile.”

That quote is by the poet William Cullen Bryant and fully sums up this post. Fall is officially upon us with this recent cold spell through Colorado, and much of the US. The leaves are changing and will fall soon, the days are shorter and there is a definite change in the air. The colder air brings with it much inspiration in the warm, vibrant, spicy colors and the desire to nest and spend more time in our interiors, but still looking out on this beauty. Here are several images that I find beautiful and inspiring in this autumnal season. Enjoy!

Inspiration“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.” ― Lauren DeStefano, Wither

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” ― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Colorado StyleThis one reminds me of Colorado, with the mountains and Aspen. However, I’m not sure where it was taken.

Fashion & Interiors Look-A-Likes

  |  in Fashion, Inspiring Images, pink, yellow1 Comments

It’s often noted that many interior design trends follow that of designer fashion. We often see colors, elements and textures come off the runway and into the home season after season. Interior, textile and furniture designers take the brilliant collections from fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Alexander McQueen turning them out beautifully for the home. At times, we also see fashion inspired by interior trends such as last season’s romance with upholstery fabrics.

What would this collaboration look like side by side? We’ve put together a collection of look-a-like ensembles and rooms to give you an idea of what this close correlation between industries might look like.

“After the hardness of Fall, we wanted something gentle and kind, fragile but strong, too,” Marc Jacobs said, touting the workmanship of the Louis Vuitton’s Spring RTW collection.

A peach and blue dining room captures the femininity of the Louis Vuitton ensemble above. The combination of casual and formal plays nicely off the “fragile but strong” look Jacobs was going for in his collection.

“Hanne Gaby Odiele has this sunny, exuberant personality and a relaxed and cool sense of style,” Derek Lam said. “Over the years, she has become sort of a muse for me.”  Style.com notes bold playfulness is at the heart of the 10 Crosby Derek Lam Collection.

Bold yellow and red mimic the sunny silhouette of Derek Lams dress in which he gets across his point of bold yet playful.

Style.com said of the Alexander McQueen RTW collection by Sarah Burton, “She based her collection on the three Gs: Grès for the pleating and draping, Gaudí for the architecture, and Gaia for the sense of all-encompassing oceanic life that infused the clothes, like the outfits composed of coral or shells.”

Whispery pink with subtle shimmery accents makes this room, the interior reincarnation of Burton’s shell like ensemble above.

For the Celine Spring RTW 2012 collection, designer Phoebe Philo had “shape” in mind. “It’s just very sculptural, very three-dimensional,” she said. “We accentuated the bits that felt strong to accentuate, tried to create some new proportions.”

The sophisticated pairing of black and white makes a strong statement reminiscent of the fashionable pairing above. The mix between modern graphic elements and floral ones, make this room a reflection of the runway look previously.

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez expressed that Googie architecture was the inspiration for their Spring collection. “Mid-century road-stop architecture,” Hernandez said. “It was once cutting-edge, but now it’s decrepit. Lost optimism.”

With architecture being the muse behind Proenza Schouler’s Spring line, this room reflects the florals and raw grays of the dress above.

Inspiring Images | Kuekenhof Gardens (Tulips!)

I have recently returned from a European trip visiting Budapest and Amsterdam. It’s Tulip season in Holland, so we did the proper touristy thing and took a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens. Keukenhof is known as the “Garden of Europe” and boasts a full 7,000,000 flower bulbs. That’s seven million bulbs that are arranged and replanted into beautiful designs and combinations every year! It also holds the title of most photographed place on earth. To say it is beautiful would be an understatement.

I love tulips, I even had a spread of white and purple tulips in my wedding, so this was a little slice of heaven on earth. And they hyacinth! Hyacinth were also planted en mass and their perfume filled the air. If you ever have the opportunity, I suggest a visit. I have tried to capture the beauty and feel as much as possible, but I feel photos can never do a place like Keukenhof justice.

Enough words, sit back and enjoy the beauty!

I really loved the bold colors of the tulips and the strong statements made with them together. Yet, I’m also so drawn to the classic red tulip. It’s simple. It’s elegant. It’s timeless.

And no Beautiful Habitat post would be complete without ideas for incorporating these inspiring images into your home. Some beautiful container gardens. I love both the mental buckets and the bold painted urn.

Hi all! I’m Susi and I write as a guest blogger for DesignShuffle.com, a fabulous social media site that promotes interior designers from around the world and their work. My writing focuses on things I’m passionate about: interior design, home furnishings, gardening and art. I’m lucky enough to have a background in art history, auctions, and antiques, and a passion for decorating ideas. Plus, I get to look at gorgeous things all day and write about them. What a fantastic job!

This week I’ll be looking at ways to add exciting patterns for every room in the home. From bold patterned tiles to graphic towels and linens, don’t be afraid to bring patterns into your home. Patterns add interest and style to any space. Be bold, mix and match, and have fun with pattern!

Patterned floors in the kitchen, bath or entry add an extra style element to these rooms. Tile laid in interesting patterns or a herringbone wood floor are interesting twists on these traditional materials.

Coco Cozy via

Patterned tiles… for the bath or kitchen add color as well as pattern to these spaces. Use them on the floor or as a backsplash. Moroccan style tiles are very popular now.

Bedding Chic via

Bold patterned bedding is a smart way to add pattern to the bedroom design. Mix and match it with solids to break up the pattern, or choose a patterned coverlet or duvet.

Design Sponge via

A bold pattern area rug is a smart choice for adding pattern to a dining room, entry, living room, bedroom or even a bathroom design. Indoor/outdoor rugs can add pattern to your porch or deck.

Apartment Therapy via

Wallpaper is the big trend for adding pattern to walls today. Available in a range of patterns, colors and sheens, wallpaper can work in small spaces, like powder rooms, and larger rooms like dining rooms.

Shore Dreams and Beautiful Things via

Colorful patterned bath towels, like these from Amy Butler, can liven up your bath or guest bathroom. Patterned tea towels for the kitchen are a hot trend right now. Other interior design ideas to think about, might include colorful tea towels as guest towels in a powder room.

Rent the Runway via

Curtains in the living room, dining room or bedroom can be the perfect place to add pattern. And they are easily changed if you decide you don’t like the pattern anymore.

Pepper Design via

Pillows, like these ikat patterned pillows from Fabricadabra, are the easiest way to add patterns to any room.
Pattern will add excitement to your décor and your life, start adding it today!

Happy Colors | Yellow

It’s hard to dispute yellow as a Happy Color. Yellow is associated with joy, sunshine, warmth and freshness. Just look at any child’s drawing and you’re likely to see a bright yellow sun or a yellow happy face. I love yellow and have used it in both my own, and client’s homes. And this is certainly not the first time I’ve mentioned yellow in the Beautiful Habitat blog.

Yellow is a big bold happy color, so let’s start with the boldest of yellow rooms.

Green Home Design in Denver

  |  in art, bath, Beautiful Habitat, bedroom, color, contemporary, creative, Denver, Designers, fireplace, green, kitchen, local, recycle, sustainable, Wall Covering, yellow3 Comments

Each year, HGTV searches for  a leading “green” community and local builder to showcase the latest and greatest in sustainable home design.  This years Green Home is in the Stapleton redevelopment area of Denver, Colorado.  Being a Denver Interior Designer, I was in line to see the home as soon as it opened up to tours last week.

Before we get to the highlights, a few quick notes about the Stapleton redevelopment area for those who aren’t familiar with Denver. Stapleton is the old Denver airport, which was replaced by the Denver International Airport in 1995. In 1990, the Stapleton Redevelopment Foundation was created to determine best uses for the 7.5 acre site. The vision: community as a “Neo-Urban Lifestyle.” A blend of the best of the urban with the best of the suburban: convenient, accessible and cultured along with safety, outdoor space and a clean, family community. 30 percent of the space would be reclaimed into open green space, parks and nature preserve. And, town centers with grocery stores, restaurants and retail would crop up next to homes,  making for a walkable and outdoor-driven community. For more visit StapletonDenver.com or HGTV.

What’s green about the Denver HGTV Green Home?

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Certified  by the US Green Building Council. (LEED Platinum is the highest green certification out there).
  • HERS (Home Energy Rating System) score of 38, when most homes built to code today score 100 (lower is better, in case you hadn’t already sorted that out)
  • Energy Star certified
  • Significatn recycled and reclaimed content including beetle-kill wood and pieces recycled from the former airport
  • Built with locally sourced materials whenever possible
  • Solar energy system providing 75% of home’s electricity
  • Most furniture and accessories made with eco-friendly fabric and materials
  • Most artwork is original work by local artist and purchased at local shops and galleries

Now the highlights of the interior design and decoration…

Entrance/Front Yard

My favorite piece here is the retaining wall. Not only does it add an interesting texture in the landscape design, but it is made from the blast screen that used to be between the old airport and the highway. That is clever and beautiful reuse! Other Eco-friendly features include the xeroscaping and a permeable walking surface that captures and redistributes the water.

Denver Interior Design

Great Room

The overall interior design of the home is smaller, with a focus on natural light and smart, functional, and multi-purpose spaces. Do more with less. The living room, kitchen and dining rooms are all open to each other. It’s compact, but very functional design. The interior decorating is fun, with a focus on eco-friendly products all sourced from Denver resources.

Living Room Interior Design ColoradoYes, that is a chair made of reclaimed radiators. No, I was not allowed to sit in it and do not know if it is comfortable. If not, at least it’s interesting artwork and 100% recycled.

“Do” Room

This multi-purpose room features laundry, and three separate pull-out, hide-away work stations. Again, it’s a compact, but highly functional interior design plan.

Upstairs Loft

The upstairs loft area is another comfy family room with great natural light and views. It’s an ideal place for kids or adults. Great local Denver art adds fun and color to the interior design plan.

Colorado Interior DecoratorThere are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a loft and a nook/office space upstairs. Check out the online tour for more photos of the spaces not seen here.

Master Suite

In place of a traditional headboard, the entire wall of the master suite is clad with pine beetle-kill wood. It doesn’t feel rustic, but adds a great reclaimed natural element to the room. All Interior doors in the home are also reclaimed beetle-kill wood and they are beautiful (see below).

My Favorite Design Element

This door is to the master bath. Look closely and you’ll see a motion detector in the upper corner of the door opening. This motion detector senses when the bathroom door closes, then starts heating the water for the mater bath. No waiting for the hot water to reach upstairs, wasting gallons and gallons each day.  Brilliant! From the decorating standpoint, I really love these sliding “barn-style” doors and the frosted glass, which continues to let natural light flood the whole home.

Outdoor Spaces – Front and Back

Both the front and back yards feature large seating areas to enjoy the Colorado weather and views.

If you can see the home in person, it’s well worth the time and money and all proceeds go to a Denver charity, Urban Peak. Urban Peak helps homeless youth and those at risk of becoming homeless to overcome real life challenges by providing essential services and a supportive community, empowering them to become self-sufficient adults.

I am always drawn to rooms that are a strict color palette of black, white and one other color.  The contrast makes the spaces so interesting.  Here are a few such rooms for your to enjoy!

Favorite Things – Traffic Light Pendant

Napa Style is one of my favorite Eco Home companies. They frequently reuse and refurbish items into fabulous, fun new products.  Here, modern, colorful and fun pendant lights have been created from old traffic lights.

The glass insulators, once a common sight on telegraph and telephone lines, make perfect sleeves for incandescent bulbs. And the old traffic lights and lenses—now being replaced by modern LEDs—are rescued, cleaned and cut as perfect shades.
These would be a great addition to a kitchen, or rec room or grouped over a dining table as a wonderful conversation starter.

Bloom and Bouquet Furniture

  |  in color, contemporary, creative, Inspiring Images, table, yellowNo Comments

I very recently posted an Inspiring Images piece from the Chelsea Flower Show. Now I’ve come across some beautiful furniture that takes flowers as inspiration very literally.

From Kenneth Cobonpue, The Bloom Chair will add a sense of fun and spring time to any room. The chairs are handmade of a microfiber sculpted by hundreds of fine running stitches over a resin base. It is available in moss green, light green, red or yellow. I’d take it in any one of those colors!

Also from Kenneth Cobonpue,is the bouquet table. It is a resin table with floral pattern relief, available in black or white and as a coffee table or end table.

For more ideas on how to find inspiration for your home anywhere, see my posts on inspiring images or my post on interpreting inspiration into your interiors.
